William Penn House

The William Penn House is a Quaker-operated hostel located in a 1917 row house in historic Capitol Hill, five blocks east of the US Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress, and within walking distance of the Smithsonian museums. A Metro bus (#96) runs by the hostel directly to the site of Split This Rock Poetry Festival programs. The House is four stories with staff living in the fourth floor and in the basement. They offer shared accommodations only; there are no private rooms. Unfortunately, they do not have an elevator, so you must be able to use stairs. Accommodations include bed linens, towels, and a simple breakfast each morning. You do not have to be a Quaker to stay there.

Rates range from $40 to $50 per person per night; the family rate is $135 per family per night for a family of 4 ($25 for each additional family member). Group rates range from $30 to $40 per person per night, depending on the size of the group. To make a reservation you may book online, email info@williampennhouse.org, or call 202-543-5560 with the following information:

  • Which nights will you stay, what time you'll arrive (the office closes at 9 PM), and the day do you plan to leave
  • The number of people (male and female) in your group
  • Your full name, address, and phone number
  • If you are with an organization, please give its name
  • Your credit card information (required to hold the reservation)
